Sadly, my GP / the neurology department where I lived were very disinterested in the experience and had no time for ‘alternative’ therapies such as nutritional supplements. If I went to a private practitioner, I’m certain the experience would be different, but this was the NHS and not well-equipped to look into it at that depth.

The full flush form at a very high (dangerously high) dose did work, but I couldn’t repeat the experience or it might have killed me, so please do NOT try it yourself. The non-flush kind didn’t make any bit of difference to me, so it felt like a waste of money for me.

Did you find continued relief from the niacin or not? Sounds like not? Or you decided not to take it again? Thank you. Looking for help for my dd

Thank you for sharing your story. I am a medical doctor and I frequently browse the internet looking for anecdotes offered by people relating to their response to treatments, particularly vitamin/diet-based.

Regarding niacin. I do hope, perhaps, that you’ve reviewed your experience with your personal physician. As you noted in your article, physicians do routinely advise people to “start low, go slow” in titrating up the niacin dose. In short, you should expect to be able to restart and ultimately increase the niacin dose until you reach success regarding at least the tics (but do review with your health provider).

Best of luck,
Ben, MD

I recently became aware how far off I’ve gotten. I keep everything I own tracked on an excel file. I have ratings system where I classify them based on what type of item they are (clothing, kitchenware, electronic, misc). I also keep stats on how long I’ve owned each item, how often I use them, cost, etc. I started with 800 items but am now down to 78. It’s just clothes, a few utensils, a laptop, and a phone. I’m close to getting rid of my laptop and just using the phone. Everything I own can fit in a backpack and duffel bag. It feels freeing and restrictive at the same time. I don’t know if I should seek help or just keep going this way because I feel like a mostly happy person, but I just don’t want to own anything.

In truth, there are so, so many potential side effects for all these medications and there was no space to list them all in the article. Thank you for sharing your own experience. I’m sure a lot of people can relate to it. I really hope you find the right course of treatment for you, be it medication or something different.

Thank you so much for your feedback and also your husband’s story. It’s such a hard road finding your unique therapeutic method(s). Nutrition, exercise and sleep seem to help a lot of people with not just Tourette’s but so many other medical conditions, as well. Seems like such a basic, ‘primitive’ solution, but I think people underestimate how powerful those three things really are!

They are the most insightful and well-written by far of any material we have ever seen on Tourette’s.
My husband began to have Tourette’s symptoms in the late 1960’s, but wasn’t diagnosed till 13 years later. Unfortunately, he had been loaded with horrible drugs, the same ones you received, which produced no ultimate benefit.
Nutrition and exercise and sleep seem to be helping the most.
Thank you so much for enlightening the public on this syndrome!
We would like to subscribe to your blog please.
